13 Year IRE Patient Success Story

I am honored to share an extraordinary case from my practice, highlighting the successful long-term management of a patient with locally advanced pancreatic cancer.


𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲

54 Year Old Woman originally diagnosed Pancreatic Colloid Carcinoma: Locally Advanced Pancreatic Cancer, in September of 2010

• Uncinate process mass–no jaundice–360° SMA encasement with 300 degree involved of SMV and first 2 branches


𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

• 6 months of chemotherapy of Gemzar based therapy. Stable Disease 

• Treating physicians recommended Hospice 

• 8/11 Underwent then open IRE ablation of Pancreatic Head mass with 4 probe configuration as a square – concurrent Gastrojejunostomy for presumed 3rd portion duodenum obstruction with Choledochojejunostomy 

• Course uncomplicated except for post-op ascites that required one paracentesis and medical management. Resolved at 8 weeks

• Received 3 additional months of chemotherapy


𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐔𝐩

• Followed every 3 months for 2 years from operation and then every 6 months with Triple Phase CT scan and CA19-9

• 𝟑 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬: Stable disease with no recurrence.

• 𝟕 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬: Re-Exploration with a distal Bile Duct resection to panc head and all biopsies negative for recurrence.

• 𝟏𝟑 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬: the patient was seen April 2024 and CT showed no evidence of disease.


This case is a testament to the resilience and determination of our patient. Witnessing such a positive outcome after 13 years is incredibly rewarding and reaffirms our commitment to pushing the boundaries in oncology treatment. However, it's important to remember that the overall survival for pancreatic cancer patients within our practice is 𝟑𝟐 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 from diagnosis, highlighting the ongoing challenges we face in treating pancreatic cancer.
